Samsung NC20 Netbook

Samsung NC20 in stock in the UK

We are stretching the bounds of what constitutes a netbook here. By our own definition the NC20 is more of a sub notebook but we have already allowed the Dell inspiron Mini 12 so how could we pass up on Samsung’s NC20?

No review as yet I’m afraid just the bare specification and some info on its secret weapon, the VIA Nano.

We do have some issues with describing the NC20 as a netbook but the fact remains that it is netbook money, we want one, its our site so it stays!

The Samsung NC20 falls outside of the usual netbook territory for the following reasons. At 12.1 Inches the screen is too large and weighing 1.5kg it is too heavy.

Nonetheless the netbook landscape is due for a shakeup and before we get the dual core Atom to drool over this is the closest we are likely to get to netbook porn.

The 12.1 Inch screen delivers a 1280×800 pixel resolution and the screen bezel incorporates a 1.3 megapixel webcam.

For your money you get 1Gb RAM, a 160Gb hard disk Drive and Windows XP Home. This is all sounding very familiar I hear you cry.

Wireless networking courtesy of 802.11 b/g/n and also bluetooth 2.0 are sooooo standard.  Sadly no built in 3G access is provided.

VIA NANO U2250

So apart from the big screen and associated usable keyboard what is the fuss about?

Well the NC20 is the first Netbook to incorporate the VIA Nano CPU.

The name VIA usually strikes fear into the hearts of those who like to get anything done following the disaster that was the VIA C7 processor.

It seems that they have redeemed themselves with the Nano and produced a chip which takes the fight to the Intel Atom N270 and then soundly whips it’s behind.

There is a very good comparative test of the Nano v the Intel Atom here and broadly speaking it shows the Nano to significantly outperform the the Atom in almost all areas although it can get a little warm and sometimes use more power than the Atom.
